Live Line Demonstration

South Central Indiana REMC linemen take their work seriously but make safety issues fun. “Power line safety is one of the most serious and deadly issues a utility lineman has to face and it also affects people in the community who may come in contact with live power wires,” stated Joe Banfield, Journey Lineman for SCI REMC. “You must always presume power lines are live whether they are on utility poles or laying on the ground,” stated Banfield.

Never touch a power line. Momentary contact can injure or kill people. This is the message that more than 1,000 Mooresville elementary students received during the All Around the Town presentations by SCI REMC linemen. During the REMC Safety demonstration, Newby school kids learned how to be safe and avoid contact with power lines or items that may be in contact with power lines. Glass characters filled with neon gas that glows when they come in contact with miniature power lines are used in the demonstration. These characters allow the students to see the path that electricity travels through the body, which is important in learning about how electricity can injure a person. “The demonstration is a fun and interesting way to teach children about the dangers of downed power lines,” stated Banfield. “The demonstration by the South Central Indiana REMC was outstanding,” stated Julie Swain, coordinator of the event. “This demonstration is appealing to both children and adults, stated Swain. “It’s information that you must know how to react to in seconds or it could mean serious injury or even death.”

Joe Banfield, Chris Chafin, Donnie Taylor, and Paul Mulvehill, linemen from South Central Indiana REMC are taking this safety program on the road. Schools, scouting organizations, churches and even first responder emergency organizations have all expressed an interest in the program. “It can be tailored to the individual audience,” stated Phil Mattison, Vice President of Operations for South Central Indiana REMC. “Before we finished the All Around the Town program, which included visiting five elementary schools, North Madison school called and wanted us to do four presentations for their second grade classes.” The SCI Safety program is typically thirty minutes to an hour long.
