Frequently Asked Questions - Propane

Q. Does SCI Propane set a new tank?
A. Yes, we set a new tank and metered and conduct a pressure and leak test for each new tank set. If you currently have a tank from another supplier, then once the gas is used in the current tank, we will set the tank aside. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to have their old tank picked up. Typically all new customer tanks must be set by November 1st to receive the guaranteed pricing.

Q. What if I own my own tank?
A. If a member owns their own propane tank, there is no minimum usage requirement and no usage penalty is assessed. However, the one time cost of $150 still applies.

Q. What is included in the tank set?
A. One 500 gallon tank, 2 regulators, Meter, and a Pressure and Leak test

Q. What are the tank set requirements?
A. Tanks must be set at least 10 feet from the home or building. Tanks must be within 80 feet of the driveway. Tanks will be set on blocks furnished by the supplier. Customer may pour pad at their own expense.

Q. Who do I call if I smell or detect a gas leak?
A. Call the 24-Hour emergency contact number for Co-Alliance (our propane supplier) 800-525-0272 and follow the prompts on the automated response.

Q. How is my service billed?
A. Billing for your propane services will begin on the date of installation. Your first bill will include your tank set/account activation fee ($150) and your first month’s usage. Remember, you are billed only for what you use each month; there is no tank fill charge or monthly tank lease. Your propane billing will be mailed each month along with your electric bill.

Q. How do you set the service installation date?
A. SCI Propane prioritizes new tank service installations based on each new customer’s current circumstances, such as amount of propane in your existing tank, no service at all, new home under construction. You will receive a call from Co-Alliance who will schedule your tank set with you.
Please note the following: all new tanks must be set by November 1st, regardless of any outstanding balance of gas in your current supplier’s tank, so please plan accordingly if you require more gas from your old supplier prior to our installation. Please also note that we cannot move an existing tank (for a new SCI Propane service set) with greater than 10% volume, due to safety regulations.

Q. What if I add new appliances after the tank installation?
A. If you should opt to replace or add an appliance to your home that receives propane service, you are required to contact SCI Propane for scheduling of a new pressure and leak test. This test is a required safety test at any time the propane service has been disrupted, turned off, or an item has been added to the service, including replacement of an existing appliance. A $60 charge will be incurred to your account for this test. However, should you not schedule a pressure and leak test, you may be jeopardizing the safety of your family, as well as incurring liability should a negative event occur. Please call Nora Loechel directly at 765-352-4765 prior to installation/replacement of a product or after a disruption in your service.

Q. Is there a charge when I leave the program?
A. Yes. There is a $60 pump out fee for the gas and $60 tank pick up fee. However, if the tank and meter get transferred to a new qualified homeowner, there is no fee accessed.

Please call our supplier Co-Alliance at 800-525-0272 and notify them of the change so a new pressure and leak test can be scheduled. Or, you may email Nora Loechel or call her directly at 765-352-4765 prior to installation/replacement of a product or after a disruption in your service and she will be happy to assist you.
