Project Indiana’s Impact in Palmira, Guatemala

Imagine living without electricity – no lights after dark, no way to charge a phone, no refrigeration for food. For the people of Palmira, Guatemala, this was daily life. That changed when the Project Indiana crew, including SCI REMC lineworkers Cody Campbell and Dakota Grimes, arrived January 29.

By the time they returned home February 15, they had wired 197 homes, bringing light and opportunity to families who had never had power before. A truly heartwarming moment came when trucks rolled in, carrying refrigerators and stoves – tangible proof of the transformation taking place.

What Is Project Indiana?
Project Indiana is a mission-driven initiative by Indiana Electric Cooperatives, dedicated to empowering global communities through electricity. What started in 2012 as an effort to electrify remote villages has grown into a movement focused on sustainability. Today, Project Indiana not only provides power but also helps improve education, nutrition, water, and health care – creating lasting change much like what happened in rural Indiana in the 1930s. Project Indiana is funded entirely through donations and partnerships from sponsors of the project.

SCI REMC’s Role in the Mission
As a proud participant in Project Indiana, SCI REMC lineworkers Cody Campbell and Dakota Grimes volunteered to be part of this life-changing journey. They worked alongside other rural electric cooperative lineworkers across Indiana, pulling wire, installing lights, and ensuring each home had three overhead lights, two outlets, and three light switches. The joy on the villagers’ faces when they saw their homes illuminated for the first time was unforgettable.
